K–1st Grade: In-house games at the YMCA.

Build skills, gain confidence and have fun in our six-week instructional program designed to introduce the fundamentals in a supportive, encouraging environment. As the season progresses, participants will begin applying their skills in 3v3 game play, helping them develop teamwork, decision-making and confidence. Ages 5-6 play on 8′ hoops, and 7-10 year-olds play on 9′ hoops.

The season concludes with our exciting Celebration Day, where family and friends are invited to cheer on our athletes as they showcase everything they’ve learned. The event wraps up with a special awards ceremony featuring medals, certificates and a team photo to celebrate each participant’s hard work and accomplishments.

Our Instructional Basketball Program for ages 5–12 focuses on building skills, confidence, and a love for the game in a fun & active environment.

Players learn the fundamentals through engaging drills, skill stations, and game-based play designed to keep them moving and improving each week. Whether brand new to basketball or looking to sharpen skills, every participant is set up for success regardless of experience level.

Hoop heights are adjusted by age for development:

• Ages 5–6: 8-foot hoops
• Ages 7–12: 9 to 10-foot hoops

Intermediate Leagues are designed for players with a firm grasp of the fundamentals and readiness for moderate competition. There are no tryouts or evaluations, and teams are established by school attendance area (play with your friends!) as much as possible, practice once a week and play one or two games on Friday nights or Saturdays in the Madison or Sun Prairie areas. WIAA rules and referees are used. The schedule includes 9-10 regular season games and an end-of-season tournament, and all players get a jersey.

YMCA Intermediate Leagues are good options for kids and families looking for a more moderate time commitment and minimal travel.

The Monona Grove High School coaching staff and the YMCA will host evaluations. Evaluations are not tryouts, and all players will be placed on a team. Depending upon numbers, some kids may be recommended for the Y’s Intermediate program to continue skill development work. The goal behind evaluations is to get kids placed on the team that will most enable their success. We want all players to play at the appropriate level.

Prepare for the basketball season with focused skill development and competitive gameplay. The Preseason Basketball Academy is designed for players looking to strengthen their fundamentals, improve decision-making and build confidence before league play.

Each session combines 45–60 minutes of skill development with 15–30 minutes of competitive 3v3 gameplay, giving players the opportunity to immediately apply what they work on. Training focuses on ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, defense and basketball IQ.

This six-week program meets once per week. Players of all skill levels are welcome.
