Whether you’re just starting out, an advanced travel player or somewhere in between, YMCA hoops programs have you covered!
The Y has the most comprehensive K-8 youth basketball program for girls and boys in Dane County. Our tiered approach serves kids of all skill levels, starting with the basic fundamentals and advancing through higher levels of competition based on the needs of your player. Our volunteer coaches always complete background checks and teach individual skills, teamwork and rules & strategies. And of course, what’s more fun than playing hoops with friends?! Whether your child craves social connectedness from being part of a team or is on their way to the pros, Y Youth Basketball has the depth and breadth to include everyone. Plus, we strive to make playing affordable, even at the highest levels, and Y Financial Assistance is always available to those in need.

Basketball Try-It Night
Curious about basketball? Join us for our FREE Basketball Try-It Night and experience one of the most popular youth sports at the Sun Prairie YMCA!
This fun and welcoming event is designed for players in Kindergarten–8th Grade. Whether your child is brand new to basketball or interested in seeing what it’s like to participate in YMCA basketball programs, this event is a great opportunity to get on the court.
Participants will learn basketball fundamentals, including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and gameplay through engaging drills and activities led by YMCA staff. No experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome.
Come build confidence, develop new skills, make new friends, and experience YMCA Basketball!
Grades K-4th

Beginner Leagues (Gr. K-3)
Beginner Leagues for boys and girls focus on skill development, teamwork and most of all, fun! The program stresses basic basketball fundamentals, concepts and learning the rules of the game. Teams are composed of no more than 12 players (six players per team play at the same time in a 3v3 format on side-by-side courts). All players get a team t-shirt. The season consists of three weeks of practice and seven weeks of games. Game times vary from week to week, and schedules and rosters will be sent via email one week prior to the start of the program. Team or coach requests are not guaranteed for late registrations after November 1st.

Instructional Basketball
Build skills, gain confidence, and have fun in our 6-week Instructional Basketball program! Designed to introduce the fundamentals of basketball in a supportive, encouraging environment.
As the season progresses, participants will begin applying their skills in 3v3 game play, helping them develop teamwork, decision-making, and game confidence.
The season concludes with our exciting Celebration Day, where family and friends are invited to cheer on our athletes as they showcase everything they’ve learned through 3v3 game intervals. The event wraps up with a special awards ceremony featuring medals, certificates, and a team photo to celebrate each participant’s hard work and accomplishments.

Instructional Class
Our Instructional Basketball Program for ages 5–12 focuses on building skills, confidence, and a love for the game in a fun & active environment.
Players learn the fundamentals through engaging drills, skill stations, and game-based play designed to keep them moving and improving each week. Whether brand new to basketball or looking to sharpen skills, every participant is set up for success regardless of experience level.
Hoop heights are adjusted by age for development:
- Ages 5–6: 8-foot hoops
- Ages 7–12: 9 to 10-foot hoops

La Follette Lancers Travel Teams (Gr. 3-8 boys)
Travel teams are designed for players who have played a significant amount of organized basketball and developed beyond the basic fundamentals. A fair amount of travel and time commitment is required. Teams practice twice per week and compete in the Badger Development League, playing six weekends (three games per weekend) over a season that lasts about four months. Teams may also participate in independent tournaments (additional fees may apply). Full uniforms are included and returned at the end of the season.
Rosters are assembled following an evaluation process led by the La Follette High School coaching staff. Players must reside in the La Follette attendance area of the Madison Metropolitan School District for this feeder program. Players are not guaranteed equal playing time, and parents may be asked to volunteer for team functions. Mandatory coaches meeting TBA.
Player evaluation dates and times:

Preseason Basketball Academy
Get ready for the upcoming basketball season with the YMCA’s Preseason Basketball Academy! Designed for players in grades 5–8, this program is the perfect opportunity to develop skills, build confidence, and prepare for league play.
Participants will improve ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, defense, and overall basketball IQ through structured instruction, competitive drills, and game-based activities. Whether you’re new to basketball or looking to sharpen your skills before the upcoming season, this program provides a fun and supportive environment to learn and grow.
The Preseason Basketball Academy will meet once per week for six weeks at the Sun Prairie YMCA branch. Each session includes 45-60 minutes of skill development and instruction followed by 15-30 minutes of competitive 3v3 gameplay, giving athletes the opportunity to apply what they learn in a game-like setting.
The Preseason Basketball Academy is the perfect way to improve skills, gain valuable game experience, and get ready for YMCA Basketball League competition.

The season consists of two weeks of practice followed by four weeks of game play. Game times vary from week to week, but will not start before 5 pm. Schedules and rosters will be sent via email one week prior to the start of the program. Team or coach requests are not guaranteed for late registrations.

Possible Game times:
Tuesday (K/1st COED & 2nd/3rd Girls) = 5:15pm, 6:15pm, 7:15pm

Summer Slam 3v3 Leagues (Gr. K-3)
Our summer 3v3 beginner-level leagues for boys and girls focus on skill development, teamwork and most of all, fun! The program stresses basic basketball fundamentals, teams are composed of no more than 12 players and team t-shirts are included. Volunteer coaches needed!
The season consists of two weeks of practice followed by four weeks of game play. Game times vary from week to week, but will not start before 5 pm. Schedules and rosters will be sent via email one week prior to the start of the program. Team or coach requests are not guaranteed for late registrations.
Please register for the grade your child just completed this past school year.
Depending upon enrollment, East, West and Sun Prairie leagues may be combined, so some travel may be required.

Teams are composed of no more than 12 players (six players per team play at the same time in a 3v3 format on side-by-side courts). Volunteer coaches needed!
The season consists of two weeks of practice followed by four weeks of game play. Game times vary from week to week, but will not start before 5pm. Rosters (Team placement) will be sent via email one week prior to the start of the program. Schedules will be sent via email at the start of the program. Team or coach requests are not guaranteed for late registrations.
Possible Game times:
Tuesday (K/1st COED & 2nd/3rd Girls) = 5:15pm, 6:15pm, 7:15pm
Thursday (2nd/3rd Boys) = 5:15pm, 6:15pm, 7:15pm
