Swim Lessons: Ages 6-12 years
Develop a love of swimming.
Kids love the water, which is great since Dane County has over 23,000 acres of water. With that much water surrounding us, it is important that kids know how to swim so they are prepared to face the potential dangers presented by bodies of water. Swimming lessons at the Y are a great way for kids to develop a love of swimming while learning critical swim skills that they will use for their entire life. Swim lessons at the Y are structured to allow kids to progress as their skills progress and range from level 1 to 6 and Swim Team Prep.
Level 1-3 Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming
competency by learning two benchmark skills:
• Swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit
• Jump, push, turn, grab
YOUTH LEVEL 1
Swimmer should be able to enter and exit the pool independently and be in the water without a parent. This is a beginning level.
YOUTH LEVEL 2
Swimmer should be comfortable going under water and blowing bubbles, float on front and back with assistance. They should be able to swim with a float belt/noodle unassisted.
YOUTH LEVEL 3
Swimmer should be able to float on front (with face in the water) and on their back unassisted. Paddle on their front and back to the middle of the pool (about 15 yds) without assistance or a flotation device, be able to put face in while swimming and be comfortable going into the deep end with a flotation device.
Level 4-6 Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity
YOUTH LEVEL 4
Swimmer should be able to swim 25 yds (one length) of Front Crawl with face in the water unless taking a breath & Back Crawl. Comfortable jumping in the deep water and recovering to the side.
YOUTH LEVEL 5
Swimmer should be able to swim 50 yds (one lap/down and back) of Front Crawl with rotary breathing & 50 yards of Back Crawl, 25 yds (one length) of Elementary Backstroke. Know the basic Breaststroke and Butterfly kick.
YOUTH 6
Swimmers should be able to proficiently swim 100 yds of Front Crawl (with rotary breathing) and Back Crawl. Be proficient swimming 50 yds of Elementary Backstroke and be able to swim 25 yds of Breaststroke and Butterfly. Comfortable diving from the side in the deep end and working on diving from the blocks. Swimmer is ready for swim team, if interested.
Swim Team Prep Develop the 4 competative strokes and build endurance at a faster pace than swimming lessons. Just like swim team practice without committing to a seven month swim team season.

BEGINNERS

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
This group is geared toward swimmers that can already swim all four competitive strokes. Participants must be able to swim 100 yards without stopping in backstroke and front crawl. In addition they must also be able to swim 50 yards of breaststroke and butterfly. Focus will be put on all aspects of competitive swimming including stroke work, starts and turns.

Youth Level 3
Swimmer should be able to float on front (with face in the water) and on their back unassisted. Paddle on their front and back to the middle of the pool (about 15 yds) without assistance or a flotation device, be able to put face in while swimming and be comfortable going into the deep end with a flotation device.
